This section’s music composition primarily focuses on echoing the concept captured by Professor Laila Fan’s soundscapes – that each person lives in their melody. For example, the commands in the exercise routines have a 10-beat cycle, the rhythm of basketball is irregular, and the bell sounds from the temple have their unique cadence. Therefore, the music in this section utilizes instruments such as thumb pianos and percussion, known for their “elastic” tones, to harmonize with the soundscape elements like the temple bells and the bouncing of basketballs. Various effects are applied to highlight their distinct rhythms and melodies.
Sound Description
This is the daily life of the people of Taichung—a vibrant and lively market. It’s where vendors strive for their livelihood and homemakers take care of their families’ dinner tables coexist. The market is a place of abundance that satisfies hunger and provides a different healing experience.

Inside the market, sounds come from all directions, creating a lively atmosphere with vendors calling out, women chatting, meat vendors chopping meat, and seafood vendors washing clams. Occasionally, the sound of motorcycle engines passing through adds to the excitement. Therefore, the music design for this segment begins with a rhythm section and a guitar with a Wah-Wah effect, incorporating the characteristic vendor calls as an introduction. Then, it uses the chopping of meat and the sound of clams being washed as percussion instruments, accompanied by lively guitar and bass, presenting the vitality unique to traditional markets.

It’s a sensory paradise of eating, drinking, and entertainment on a bustling night. Various forms of vendor calls, arcade game sounds, conversations, and dazzling lights stimulate and satisfy every hungry soul and taste bud.

Creative Statement
The night market shares the same hustle and bustle as the traditional morning market but with added “youthful” soundscapes, such as arcade game machines, contemporary pop songs, and the laughter of young students. In the music design, the chopping of knives and the inflation of balloons unique to night markets are used as materials and sampled in the drum section. The composition is primarily based on the Funk music style, and mixing techniques are used to simulate the vendor calls coming from “all directions” during a night market visit, integrating the night market’s soundscape into the music.
